R&B superstar Akon has said in a recent interview that he was the one who convinced Davido to return to his native land and build a career around singing, not rap.
Akon recalled how Davido, who was born and raised in America, had wanted to develop a career in rap music but he changed his mind and asked him to back to Nigeria to start singing.
In an interview with Shade 45 host Sway, Akon also eulogised the forerunners of the Afrobeat genre who hails from Nigeria, observing that these artists are working hard to promote African music.
“At the time I was pushing ‘Thug Record’, Davido was in Atlanta trying to be a rapper. I told him, n*gga you better move back to Africa & do your music over there. He listened & went back home. Today, he’s one of the biggest Afrobeats artistes” – Akon said
Akon then turned his attention to Burna Boy, calling him a beast for soaring high with his career and the Afrobeat genre.
“I’m loving how Burna Boy is moving right now. Burna is killing it and it is interesting….Burna is one of the most, that guy is a beast, he is killing it because he coming with of Nigeria and Ghana. He represents the level every artist needs to be representing – he stated
