DESIGNER REVEALS PRESIDENT MAHAMA’S ACTIVE ROLE IN CO-CREATING HIS INAUGURAL ATTIRE

The designer of President John Dramani Mahama’s inauguration ‘agbada,’ Matthew Agambire, has disclosed that the former president played an instrumental role in co-creating the outfit he wore during his swearing-in on January 7, 2025.

In an interview with JoyNews, Agambire, owner of the Bondaana fashion brand, revealed that the outfit was a product of teamwork and creativity, deeply rooted in Ghanaian culture and identity.

“President Mahama is someone who believes so much in Ghana. He wanted something of Ghana, from Ghana, and by Ghana. When I approached him with the design ideas, he actively participated in shaping the concept,” Agambire said.

The designer shared that the incorporation of Adinkra symbols, such as Gye Nyame, Sankofa, Dwennimmen, and Nyame Dua, was his idea, but each element received the president’s approval during a collaborative process spanning two months.

The ‘agbada,’ adorned with intricate Kente embroidery and symbolic motifs, stole the spotlight at the Black Star Square. The flowing robe, paired with a matching hat, bore the Kente design titled Ɛmmerɛ Pa Da W’anim, which translates to “Better Days Lie Ahead,” signifying optimism for Ghana’s future.

Each Adinkra symbol on the attire carried a message. For instance, Sankofa urged reflection and learning from past experiences, while Gye Nyame emphasized faith in divine guidance. Agambire believes the attire reflects President Mahama’s commitment to humility, strength, and a renewed vision for Ghana.

The former president’s bold fashion statement resonated with the jubilant crowd and symbolized Ghana’s cultural heritage and regional integration efforts. The outfit not only celebrated tradition but also sent a message of unity, faith, and progress.

President Mahama, in his inaugural address, echoed the themes of renewal and transformation reflected in his attire, vowing to reset the nation’s trajectory and address Ghana’s pressing challenges with resilience and hope.
