The Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Mr. Tong Defa, has dismissed widespread claims that Chinese nationals are the main people behind illegal small-scale mining, commonly known as “galamsey,” in the country.
According to the ambassador, these claims are misleading and do not reflect the full truth about the situation on the ground.
Speaking during a press engagement, Ambassador Tong clarified that the galamsey menace did not begin in China and is not driven by Chinese nationals.
Instead, he explained that many of the Chinese individuals found on illegal mining sites in Ghana are not acting independently.
Ambassador Tong also reiterated that the Chinese government does not support illegal mining and is committed to working closely with the government of Ghana to find lasting solutions to the problem.
