Famous gospel singer Nacee from Ghana has pleaded with the audience to disregard musicians who voice grievances about the nation’s award systems.
He argues that because artists are sensitive individuals, it is inappropriate to take seriously their criticism of award programs, particularly if they are not nominated.
In an interview with TV3 on May 3, 2024, Nacee expressed his opinions about the value of music award programs such as the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) in Ghana, particularly in light of the event’s 25th anniversary of recognizing musical talent.
Nacee conceded that although performers have a tendency to criticize award programs, they also take satisfaction in their achievements, particularly when they occur on global stages.
“As musicians, we are very emotional beings. Every time the nominee list comes out, we criticise it and make the scheme feel as if it has done nothing in our circles.
“But when we go outside Ghana, we go on interviews and we are asked if we, as musicians, have won any awards, we feel proud to say, ‘Yes, I have won so, so, and so awards.’
“We are very emotional. As an artiste, you can be nominated, but if you see some categories in which you were expecting to be nominated and you are not in there, you will still complain. So, they shouldn’t listen to us,” he said.
Acknowledging the impact of the TGMA on the music industry, he urged corporate institutions to support award schemes like the TGMAs, highlighting the challenges of organising such events and the need for corporate backing.
“I think the scheme has done very, very well. We just have to encourage them, and the corporate world should support them because it’s not easy to organise a program. For them to go through this kind of coaching and directing for 25 years, we applaud them,” he said.
