DON’T MARRY IF YOU CAN’T PAY THE BILLS – Archbishop Duncan-Williams Warns Men

Action Chapel leader urges financial responsibility before marriage, says love alone isn’t enough

The Presiding Bishop and General Overseer of Action Chapel International, Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams, has cautioned men against rushing into marriage without being financially prepared to provide for their families.

Speaking in an interview with TV3’s Cookie Tee on January 23, 2026, the renowned preacher stressed that love alone is not enough to sustain a marriage, insisting that financial stability is essential for a responsible and lasting union.

“It’s not just about you loving the person; you have to be responsible,” he said. “This kind of mentality in our society ‘Oh, let’s help him, let’s help them’ is not doing justice to future generations. We are making people irresponsible.”

Archbishop Duncan-Williams urged young men to cultivate financial discipline by saving and planning ahead for the costs associated with raising a family.

“They have to save for the child coming, for the pregnancy, for school fees, for medicals. Some of them don’t even have a place to stay,” he warned.

While acknowledging that it is acceptable for couples to start life humbly, the Archbishop said the man must take responsibility for ensuring his household is financially secure.

He further cautioned that a lack of financial capacity often leads to loss of respect in marriage, particularly from wives who may feel frustrated when their husbands are unable to meet basic needs.

“Some live in somebody’s boys’ quarters or in an unfinished house. Others marry and go to stay with the woman’s parents. There’s nothing wrong with that,” he said.

“But when it gets to a point where the woman begins to lose respect for you, the marriage is over. She begins to look down on you, and you also feel unloved. A woman is not going to respect you and serve you meat when you can’t pay the bills.”

Archbishop Duncan-Williams’ comments have since sparked widespread public discussion, with many applauding his call for financial prudence and others debating the balance between love and economic readiness in modern marriages.
