Éric Sékou Chelle, the head coach of the Nigerian men’s national team, has attributed his team’s defeat in the penalty shootout to voodoo.
He claims that during the penalty shootouts, DR Congo’s players and technical staff were seen sprinkling water on the field .
“During all the penalty decisions, the guy from Congo did some voodoo. Every time, and so this is why I was nervous after him. Something like, I don’t know if it was water,” he told journalists after the game.
After losing 3–4 to DR Congo on penalties in the playoffs held in Morocco during the international break, Nigeria was unable to earn a spot in the 2026 World Cup.
