Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, daughter of former South African President Jacob Zuma and a prominent opposition lawmaker, is set to appear in court in Durban on Thursday to face charges linked to the deadly riots that rocked the country four years ago. The unrest, which erupted in July 2021, resulted in 354 deaths and extensive damage to businesses and infrastructure.
Zuma-Sambudla, a member of the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP), will be charged with inciting terrorism, according to a report by News24, which cited an anonymous source. The MKP, in a statement posted on social media platform X, confirmed her court appearance and called on supporters to demonstrate peacefully outside the courthouse. However, party spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela initially confirmed that her legal team had been served with the charges, before later stating she had no knowledge of them, News24 reported.
The MKP, founded by Jacob Zuma in late 2023, emerged as a major political force in South Africa’s 2024 elections, securing nearly 15% of the vote and stripping the ruling African National Congress (ANC) of its longstanding parliamentary majority. The ANC subsequently formed a coalition government with multiple parties, while the MKP positioned itself as the primary opposition force.
The 2021 riots erupted after Jacob Zuma was jailed for contempt of court following his refusal to testify in a corruption inquiry into his presidency. The violence, concentrated in KwaZulu-Natal—Zuma’s home province—led to significant economic losses. Authorities have since pursued legal action against those accused of instigating the unrest.
Efforts to reach the MKP for comment were unsuccessful, with the party stating that Ndhlela’s phone had been “compromised,” making him temporarily unavailable. MKP communications manager Sipho Tyira also did not respond to inquiries.
