EAST LEGON ACCIDENT: YOU CAN’T KILL TWO PEOPLE AND BE JAILED FOR ONLY SIX MONTHS – Family of victims

The families of two preteens who lost their lives in the tragic East Legon accident have expressed frustration following the court’s decision to sentence the 16-year-old driver responsible for the crash to six months in a senior correctional facility.

The teenager, the son of Bishop Elisha Salifu Amoako, Founder and General Overseer of Alive Chapel International, pleaded guilty to eight charges, including two counts of manslaughter, during the court proceedings on Thursday, December 19, 2024.

The grandmother of one of the victims, Justine Agbenu, voiced her dissatisfaction with the ruling, stating that the punishment does not match the severity of the crime.

“You can’t kill two people through reckless driving and be sentenced to only six months. This is my issue,” she said in Twi.

The families also expressed disapproval of the GH¢6,000 fines imposed on Bishop Salifu Amoako and his wife, Mouha Amoako, over their involvement in the case. They further criticized the pastor for comments that appeared to downplay the gravity of the incident, including his claim that his son “did not shoot anyone.”

Background of the Incident

The accident occurred in East Legon when the teenager, reportedly showing off the speed of a Jaguar F-Pace Sport belonging to his parents, caused a collision with a black Acura that the victims were traveling in.

According to police reports, the 16-year-old had driven with friends to A&C Mall before forming a convoy of three vehicles. Witnesses reported that he was speeding when the accident took place, resulting in the death of two young girls.

Following the crash, the teenager was remanded to the Osu Correctional Centre while awaiting trial. He initially pleaded not guilty but later admitted guilt to eight charges. In addition to the six-month sentence, the court ordered reparations, including over GH¢8,000 for a light pole damaged during the crash.

Bishop Salifu Amoako and his wife were fined GH¢6,000 each for “permitting an unlicensed person to drive.” Both parents and a sales assistant, Linda Bonsu Prempeh—who allegedly provided the vehicle key—were earlier granted GH¢50,000 bail each during their appearances at the Accra Circuit Court.
