EC SETS MARCH 3 FOR AYAWASO EAST BY-ELECTION

Electoral Commission opens nominations from February 9 to 11 following MP’s death

The Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) has announced that a by-election will be held in the Ayawaso East Constituency on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, to fill the vacancy created by the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Hon. Mahama Naser Toure.

In a press release dated January 16 and signed by Deputy Chairman for Operations, Samuel Tettey, the EC detailed the schedule and nomination procedures for prospective candidates. Nomination forms will be accepted at the EC’s Ayawaso East Municipal Office in North Ridge from Monday, February 9, to Wednesday, February 11, between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., and 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily.

Candidates may download nomination forms from the Commission’s website, www.ec.gov.gh/forms, beginning January 16. Completed forms must be submitted in quadruplicate by the candidate, or by their proposer or seconder, within the nomination window.

Each nomination must be endorsed by a proposer and a seconder—both registered voters in the constituency and backed by 18 additional registered voters from Ayawaso East. Candidates are also required to submit two recent passport-sized photographs against a red background.

The filing fee has been set at GH¢10,000 for general applicants. However, female candidates and persons with disabilities will pay a reduced fee of GH¢7,500.

The by-election is being conducted in line with Article 112(5) of the 1992 Constitution, which requires the EC to organise a poll to fill any parliamentary vacancy.

The Commission said it is committed to ensuring a transparent and credible electoral process and urged all stakeholders to adhere to the outlined procedures.
