EFFORTS TO BRING PAYPAL TO GHANA HAS PROVED FUTILE – Veep, Bawumia Reveals

Vice President of Ghana, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia mentioned that the government has failed to persuade PayPal to include Ghana in their list of countries where their payment system operates.

Even with progress in discussions, the Vice President mentioned that they have put Ghana on a blacklist.

Bawumia revealed this information during his meeting with individuals in the creative economy on Wednesday, October 16, 2024.

Nevertheless, he disclosed that the government is actively seeking a substitute for PayPal to ensure that creatives can have access to their online earnings.

“In terms of dealing with international commerce,PayPal for example we don’t have access to PayPal. Many content creators I have heard have even got monies locked up in PayPal. When you use PayPal, you money actually sits outside Ghana, it doesn’t sit inside.

Since around 2018, I’ve been engaging with Paulypal at the very highest to say look Ghana we are doing so many things but we seem to be blacklisted.

They’ve blacklisted us in that sense but I was teasing that how can you have Nigeria have PayPal and we don’t have PayPal? So we had a good laugh over it and all of that. But in all seriousness we’ve been trying to get Ghana that blacklist thing taken off and we’ve not been able to be successful. We’ve gone far but not quite there,” he said.

The Vice President mentioned that since meetings with PayPal were unsuccessful, the government and stakeholders are considering pursuing a different option.
