The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana, EC plans to livestream the upcoming IPAC meeting on October 1.
This unprecedented choice is a way for the EC to enhance transparency and accountability in its interactions with political parties before the December general elections.
Information gathered from the EC indicates that the live broadcast intends to offer Ghanaians a direct view of the discussions and decision-making procedures during the IPAC meetings.
The Commission emphasized that this decision was taken autonomously, not influenced by external pressures, specifically those from the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The EC stated that the IPAC meeting will focus on educating the public about the register and the electoral process.
The NDC, Ghana’s biggest opposition party, had previously requested for IPAC meetings to be broadcast live, expressing worries about the necessity for more transparency in discussions related to elections. Nevertheless, the EC previously denied the NDC’s appeal, indicating that live transmissions were unnecessary at that point in time.
The EC seems to have changed its position recently, stating that the live broadcast is meant to build trust in the electoral process and not just because of pressure from the NDC.
