ENDORSED BY ECOWAS, PRESIDENT MAHAMA SET FOR AFRICAN UNION CHAIRMANSHIP IN 2027
Ghana’s President unanimously backed as West Africa’s sole candidate, reviving the country’s continental leadership role.

Ghana’s President, John Mahama, is poised to lead the African Union in 2027 after receiving the unanimous endorsement of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) as the region’s sole candidate.
The decision was formalized during the Ninety-Fifth Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers in Abuja, Nigeria. The regional body highlighted Ghana’s active diplomatic role and strong international standing in its endorsement.
Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, confirmed the development on social media, stating that the endorsement “removes all obstacles and positions President Mahama as AU Chairperson-in-waiting when West Africa assumes the rotating leadership in 2027.”
President Mahama has expressed gratitude to his fellow ECOWAS leaders and committed to upholding the continent’s expectations, according to an official statement.
The African Union Chairmanship rotates annually among the continent’s five regions. West Africa is scheduled to hold the position in 2027, marking two decades since Ghana last occupied the role under former President John Kufuor from January 2007 to January 2008.
This endorsement places Ghana back at the forefront of continental diplomacy, reinforcing the nation’s longstanding influence within African political and developmental affairs.
