ENERGY MINISTER JINAPOR PETITIONS IGP OVER ALLEGED POLICE ASSAULT ON MINISTRY STAFF

Calls for impartial investigation and accountability for reported abuse during commute

Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, has formally petitioned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to investigate an alleged assault on staff of the Ministry by police officers while they were en route to work in an official ministry vehicle.

In a statement shared on social media on January 16 through the Ministry’s spokesperson, Richmond Rockson, Dr Jinapor confirmed that the alleged assault was carried out by personnel of the Ghana Police Service, not National Security operatives as previously reported.

“No citizen of this country should ever be subjected to such treatment, particularly at the hands of law enforcement officers who are mandated to protect lives and uphold the rule of law,” the Minister stated.

He condemned suggestions that the alleged assault was provoked by verbal exchanges from ministry staff in response to reckless driving by the officers involved, describing such claims as “wholly indefensible” and unacceptable.

Dr Jinapor called on the police administration to ensure a swift and transparent investigation into the matter, stressing the importance of accountability to maintain public trust in the security services.

“The Ghana Police Service must act decisively to restore public confidence in the professionalism and discipline of the Service,” he said.

The incident has drawn public concern and renewed calls for improved conduct among law enforcement officers, particularly in their interactions with civilians.
