Equatorial Guinea’s government has dismissed Baltasar Ebang Engonga from his role as Director General of the National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF) after a scandal involving leaked sex tapes surfaced online. The tapes, reportedly showing Engonga in intimate encounters with multiple women, have sparked controversy, especially as some women are linked to prominent figures in the country.
The government initially suspended Engonga following the circulation of over 400 explicit videos, but President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo later ordered his formal dismissal. According to Decree No. 118/2024, issued on November 4, Engonga’s removal was based on alleged misconduct and “family and social behavior incompatible with public office.”
Engonga, who is the son of Baltasar Engonga Edjo, president of the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa (CEMAC), was previously detained at Malabo’s Black Beach prison on charges of embezzling public funds. State broadcaster TVGE reported that the sex tapes were leaked during his time in custody.
In response to the scandal, Vice President Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue has instructed the telecommunications ministry, regulatory authorities, and telecom companies to restrict the circulation of pornographic content, citing the damage caused to families by the viral spread of the 54-year-old economist’s videos.
Additionally, Equatorial Guinea’s chief prosecutor, Anatolio Nzang Nguema, stated that if medical examinations reveal that Engonga has a sexually transmitted disease, he could face prosecution for potentially endangering public health.
