Former Ghana Football Association, (GFA) President Kwesi Nyantakyi filed a defamation lawsuit against journalist Dan Kweku Yeboah and Peace FM for 10 million cedis on Tuesday morning.
The ex-FIFA Council Member also sued Pulse Ghana and GhanaWeb for claiming that Nyantakyi stole $2 million from the GFA, seeking justice.
Nyantakyi, who previously held the position of GFA President before stepping down, claims that the statements are unfounded and describes them as “careless and damaging to one’s reputation.”
The lawsuit by Nyantakyi claims that other media outlets were also involved in amplifying Dan Kweku Yeboah’s baseless claims, which is why they have been brought into legal action.
Nyantakyi filed a lawsuit alleging that these outlets and Yeboah made defamatory comments linking him to stealing money from the GFA’s funds, causing serious harm to his reputation.
“President Kwesi Nyantakyi nkoa ko yee GFA Sika two million dollars ($2m) efee Unibank ko di ye” to wit: “President Kwesi Nyantakyi alone went to Unibank and withdrew GFA’s two million dollars and embezzled or misappropriated it for his personal benefit,” the lawsuit said.
The lawsuit claims that Yeboah’s reported statements by the media were not only untrue but were intentionally published to harm his reputation, resulting in public distress and professional damage.
“The statement of first defendant was a wicked, malicious, and deliberate falsehood published by first defendant to court hatred, opprobrium, public dislike and reduce the image of the Plaintiff in the eyes of right-thinking members of the society,” the lawsuit continued.
Moreover, the legal action highlights Nyantakyi’s argument that the allegations were not verified with reliable sources before being published, criticizing the media for irresponsible reporting.
He is requesting compensation and an official apology from the defendants through his lawyer.
