A troubling story of online fraud, kidnapping, and global collaboration has emerged as Ghana’s Police Service verified the rescue of two women who fell victim to an internet love scam and were later abducted in Nigeria.
Authorities report that the victims, Anastasia Badoo Atta and Serwaa Konadu, were approached on Facebook by suspects pretending to be white men seeking marriage.
“The suspects met the two victims through their Facebook accounts, posed as white men who wanted to marry them, and convinced them to accept the marriage proposal,” said DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor, Director General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).
The intricate deception caused the women to go to Nigeria, where they were taken.
Their suffering gained public notice when a distressing video emerged online depicting them in anguish, sparking widespread anger and immediate calls for their rescue.
Promptly, the Ghana Police Service, in collaboration with the National Signals Bureau (NSB) and the Nigerian Police Force, launched a synchronized cross-border operation.
Eight individuals were detained in relation to the case, with arrests occurring at different places in both Ghana and Nigeria.
“At the moment, information received from our counterparts in Nigeria indicates that both victims are fine. They have received routine medical checks,” DCOP Donkor assured.
