FDA WARNS PUBLIC AGAINST USING CEMENT TO PRESERVE BEANS

Authority says viral video does not reflect approved food safety practices in Ghana

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has issued a public warning against the use of cement or any unapproved substances in the preservation of beans, following the circulation of a viral video suggesting the practice.

In a press statement dated February 16, 2026, the Authority clarified that the footage, which appears to show beans being treated with a white powdery substance believed to be cement, does not represent approved agricultural or food preservation methods in Ghana.

According to the FDA, the practice shown in the video is not recognised or endorsed by the Plant Protection and Regulation Services Directorate (PPRSD) of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture.

“The FDA, together with its stakeholder institutions, does not approve of food preservation practices that compromise food safety and public health,” the statement stressed.

The Authority further condemned the use of unapproved chemicals, poor hygiene standards, and the handling of food with bare hands without protective gear, describing such actions as clear violations of established food safety regulations.

The FDA reassured the public that unsafe preservation methods are neither encouraged nor permitted in the country. It urged farm produce aggregators, wholesalers, and retailers to strictly adhere to approved food handling and storage guidelines.

Consumers have also been encouraged to report any suspicious food preservation or handling practices to the FDA for investigation and appropriate sanctions.

The Authority reiterated its commitment to safeguarding public health and ensuring that food products on the market meet national safety standards.
