FINANCE MINISTER ANNOUNCES EMERGENCY GH¢20 MILLION FUNDING TO REVIVE KUMAWOOD

Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, Ghana’s Finance Minister, announced plans to invest GH¢20 million in the film business, with a special emphasis on saving the struggling Kumawood sector. This will provide a crucial financial boost to Ghana’s struggling film industry.
Dr. Forson disclosed that the funds would supply crucial seed money through the Film Fund to support Kumawood and other film associations during his presentation of the 2026 Budget and Economic Policy Statement to Parliament on Thursday, November 13, under the theme “Resetting for Growth, Jobs and Economic Transformation”.
Once the dominant force in Ghanaian cinema, the Kumasi-based film industry has seen a disastrous downturn in recent years.
At its height, Kumawood produced a large number of movies per month, supporting hundreds of actors, directors, producers, and technical staff. That productivity has virtually vanished today.

This decline has been caused by a number of difficulties. While widespread piracy has threatened income streams, the rise of digital streaming services has drastically changed viewing habits.
These challenges have been made worse by insufficient funding and inadequate distribution networks, which have forced many professionals in the field to either completely give up on their work or look for other ways to make ends meet while production has nearly stopped.
