FIRE RAZES BOYS’ DORMITORY AT KADJEBI-ASATO SHS; STUDENTS COLLAPSE DURING RESCUE EFFORT

A morning blaze destroyed a dormitory room and its contents, while the local fire service was unable to deploy a functioning fire tender due to equipment failure.

A fire broke out at Kadjebi-Asato Senior High School on Tuesday morning, destroying a room in one of the boys’ dormitories and causing several students to collapse from exhaustion and panic as they attempted to salvage belongings.

The fire started around 9 a.m. on December 2 and quickly engulfed the dormitory room, burning the roof structure and destroying all personal items inside. By the time the blaze was contained, nothing in the affected room could be saved.

According to JoyNews’ Oti Regional Correspondent Peter Senoo, the Ghana National Fire Service response was severely hampered because the fire tender in the Kadjebi district is currently out of service. Firefighters had to rely on limited alternative methods to manage the situation.

The incident caused widespread panic among students, with dozens reportedly passing out from fatigue and distress as they tried to assist in controlling the fire and evacuating items from adjacent rooms. School authorities and community members stepped in to provide support, and the affected students have since received medical attention.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is expected, while concerns over fire safety readiness in schools especially in districts with non-functional fire tenders are likely to be raised.
