FOREIGN MINISTER CONGRATULATES PRESIDENT MAHAMA ON UNANIMOUS AU BACKING FOR HISTORIC UN RESOLUTION

President John Dramani Mahama is actively leading a major initiative on behalf of the African Union to secure reparations, restitution, and acknowledgment from European nations for the transatlantic slave trade and colonization.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has congratulated President John Dramani Mahama and the nation of Ghana for securing the unanimous endorsement of all African Union (AU) member states to support a groundbreaking resolution at the United Nations.

In a post on X, Mr. Ablakwa praised the collective achievement, which sees President Mahama’s initiative to table a resolution declaring the transatlantic slave trade as the gravest crime against humanity receive full continental backing.

The resolution also seeks reparations, including the return of looted cultural artefacts taken during the colonial period.

He wrote;

“Congratulations to President Mahama and Ghana for securing the unanimous endorsement of all African Union member states backing President Mahama’s initiative to table a resolution at the UN declaring the transatlantic slave trade as the gravest crime against humanity and to demand reparations, including the return of looted objects.

President Mahama is expected to secure a similar adoption at the 50th CARICOM Summit on the 24th of February, 2026. The resolution will be tabled at the UN General Assembly on March 25, 2026.
