FORESTRY COMMISSION OFFICER BATTLES FOR HIS LIFE AFTER MACHETE ATTACK BY ILLEGAL MINING MILITANTS IN OFFIN

A member of the Forestry Commission’s Rapid Response team is in serious condition after illegal miners attacked him in the Offin Shelterbelt Forest Reserve in the Ashanti Region.

The miners used guns and machetes.

The officer received a deep cut on his knee from a machete during the attack. The incident happened while the team was trying to stop new illegal mining in the area.

Before they went into the forest, the team had recorded a video of armed people at the forest’s entrance. But deeper inside, a group of miners had set up an ambush.

The injured officer is now being treated at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi. His identity is not yet known.

The Offin Shelterbelt Forest Reserve is often targeted by illegal miners. This activity is a major threat to forests and water bodies in the country.

The Forestry Commission, along with security agencies, is actively working to stop the damage to these important areas. However, authorities have not yet made any statements about the attack or any arrests.
