FORMER BLACK STARS PLAYER SAMUEL INKOOM FACES COURT OVER ALLEGED $3,500 FRAUD

Former Black Stars footballer Samuel Inkoom has found himself entangled in legal troubles after being charged with defrauding by pretenses in an Accra Circuit Court.

The 34-year-old ex-Ghana international is accused of collecting $3,500 from a student, Benjamin Opare Addo, under the pretense of securing a visa to the Netherlands. However, the promised visa was never delivered, prompting Addo to seek legal redress.

Appearing before the court presided over by Mr. Isaac Addo, Inkoom pleaded not guilty to the charges. He was granted bail of GH¢50,000 with one surety and is expected to reappear in court on December 30, 2024.

Inkoom’s defense counsel argued for the bail, highlighting the partial refund of GH¢7,000 made to the complainant and the accused’s ongoing efforts to repay the remaining balance of GH¢25,100. The defense further underscored Inkoom’s reputation and assured the court of his commitment to attending subsequent hearings.

Chief Inspector Jonas Lawer, leading the prosecution, recounted that in September 2023, Inkoom presented himself as the owner of S. Inkoom Travel and Tour Company. He allegedly convinced Addo that he could facilitate a visa to the Netherlands for $3,500. Over a two-month period, between September and November 2023, Addo paid a total of GH¢32,100 in installments.

Despite repeated assurances, Inkoom failed to secure the visa within the agreed timeframe. After numerous unsuccessful attempts to recover either the promised visa or the funds, Addo reported the matter to the police.

Inkoom was subsequently arrested on January 11, 2024, during which he admitted to the offense and refunded GH¢7,000. However, the balance of GH¢25,100 remains unpaid, leading to the court proceedings.

The case has drawn significant public attention, given Inkoom’s stature as a former national team player, raising concerns about the potential implications for his reputation and legal outcomes.

The next court hearing is set for December 30, 2024, where further deliberations are expected to unfold.
