FORMER NPA BOSS MUSTAPHA HAMID AND THREE OTHERS UNDER INVESTIGATION FOR ALLEGED GH¢1.3 BILLION EMBEZZLEMENT

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has launched a high-profile investigation into the alleged embezzlement of GH¢1.3 billion from the National Petroleum Authority (NPA). At a press briefing on Wednesday, Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng revealed that the probe focuses on suspected corruption and corruption-related offenses involving the Unified Petroleum Pricing Fund (UPPF), a critical mechanism for stabilizing petroleum prices across Ghana.

The investigation targets four key individuals: Jacob Amoah, Coordinator of the UPPF; Wendy Ashong Newman and Freda Tandoh, both NPA staff members; and former NPA Chief Executive Mustapha Abdul-Hamid.

“The OSP has commenced investigations into suspected corruption and corruption-related offenses in respect of an alleged embezzlement of GH¢1.3 billion from the Unified Petroleum Pricing Fund at the National Petroleum Authority,” Agyebeng stated. “The investigation primarily targets the following persons: Jacob Amoah, Wendy Ashong Newman, Freda Tandoh, and former NPA CEO Mustapha Abdul-Hamid.”

Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, who served as NPA CEO from 2021 until early 2024, oversaw the authority’s operations during a period now under scrutiny. The NPA, under his leadership, was responsible for regulating petroleum product pricing, ensuring fuel quality standards, and managing the UPPF.

The UPPF, designed to maintain consistent petroleum prices nationwide, is a vital component of Ghana’s energy sector. The alleged misappropriation of funds from this fund raises serious concerns about financial mismanagement and accountability within the NPA.

The OSP’s investigation marks a significant step in the fight against corruption, as it seeks to uncover the truth behind the alleged embezzlement and hold those responsible accountable. Agyebeng emphasized the importance of transparency and urged all parties involved to cooperate fully with the probe.
