FREE SHS EXTENDED TO PRIVATE SCHOOLS: GOV’T TO PAY GH¢1,500 TUITION PER TERM FOR STUDENTS IN PRIVATE SHS
The government is extending the Free SHS program to private Senior High Schools (SHS) as it covers tuition fees amounting to GHS 1,500 per semester for students placed in as a new pilot.
On TV3’s Hot Issues on Sunday, June 1, the Ghana National Council for Private Schools (GNACOPS) affirmed that the program will start in the 2025–2026 school year.
According to Enoch Nana Gyetuah, Executive Director of GNACOPS, the program is a strategic alliance designed to provide access to high-quality education and lessen the strain on public schools.
He said, “Government is going to supply us with a tentative amount of GHS 1,500 for tuition, per semester.’
He emphasised that the Ministry of Education has already received declarations from private SHSs that they have spaces available for consideration, and that placement will be carried out in accordance with each school’s actual capacities to guarantee successful teaching and learning.
“So the schools (private) have already declared their vacancies for the Free SHS, and that has been sent to the Ministry of Education,” he said. “The placement will be done in a way that the number of students will match the capacity of the private schools.”
School owners are thrilled with the arrangement, Mr. Gyetuah said, characterising the government’s action as mutually beneficial.
He added, “The arrangement is an attractive arrangement for these private SHS. The private school owners are very happy with this initiative and arrangement.”
