FRESH LOCAL CHICKEN WILL BECOME CHEAPER – John Dumelo Assures Ghanaians

The Minister for Food and Agriculture, John Dumelo has announced intentions to improve local poultry production and lessen Ghana’s reliance on imported chicken through a significant meat-processing project and a community-based assistance system.

Speaking on Friday, November 14, 2025, on the GTV breakfast show, Dumelo revealed the difficulties posed by imported poultry and voiced concerns regarding the freshness and age of frozen chicken brought into the nation.

He claims that some imported chicken may be “two or three years old,” but because it looks cheaper, it still winds up on the Ghanaian market. He maintained that encouraging local produce will provide consumers with healthier and fresher options.

“If you buy a live chicken, you know you slaughtered it yourself, so the meat is fresh. Maybe it might be a little bit expensive, but once we go down that route, prices will eventually come down under the ‘Nkoko Nkitinkiti programme,” he said.

Dumelo reaffirmed government plans to provide 10,000 birds to each constituency, which will be divided among 200 homes, or 50 birds per household, as part of initiatives to increase local poultry production.

According to him, the birds have already had vaccinations and been brought up to a steady level so that households can handle them more easily.

After six to seven weeks, when the birds are mature, beneficiaries can decide whether to sell them or raise them for human food.

He mentioned that the plant will purchase poultry from farmers in the catchment area and surrounding areas, process it, and sell it.

According to him, the project will not only lessen reliance on imports but also create jobs, bolster the poultry value chain, and guarantee that locally produced chicken becomes competitively priced and of high quality.
