GABON: ALI BONGO’S WIFE AND SON SENTENCED TO 20 YEARS IN PRISON

Gabon’s former first lady, Sylvia Bongo, and her son Noureddin Bongo have been sentenced to 20 years in prison after being found guilty of embezzlement and corruption.
During the two-day trial, the pair were accused of exploiting the condition of Gabon’s deposed leader, Ali Bongo, to run the country for their own personal profit. Bongo suffered a stroke in 2018.
Both Sylvia and Noureddin deny the charges against them.
The Bongo family ruled Gabon for more than five decades. Ali Bongo was in power for 14 years before he was ousted. He had succeeded his fathe,r Omar Bongo, who ruled for 42 years.
