GHANA, CZECH REPUBLIC SIGN KEY PACTS DURING HISTORIC STATE VISIT

Ghana and the Czech Republic have taken significant steps to deepen bilateral relations during Czech President Petr Pavel’s landmark state visit to Accra, the first by a Czech head of state in over six decades.

At a ceremony at Ghana’s presidential palace, President John Mahama and his Czech counterpart Petr Pavel witnessed the signing of: A Bilateral Air Services Agreement to boost direct flights and A Memorandum of Understanding on regular political consultations.

The agreements come as trade between the two nations reached $33 million last year, with both leaders expressing confidence this could grow significantly.

“This visit opens a new chapter in our 63-year relationship,” President Pavel told reporters, announcing plans to establish a Czech Technology Hub in Ghana. “We see tremendous opportunities in agriculture, mining tech, and water purification systems.”

President Mahama pushed for Czech investment in critical infrastructure projects, including Ghana’s delayed 50 and 100 Bridges initiatives. He also sought Prague’s support for regional security efforts and Ghana’s candidate for the UN Tourism Organization.

The Czech Republic, a major arms exporter, has emerged as a key security partner for several African nations. Industry analysts suggest the visit could lead to defense cooperation agreements.

The two leaders agreed to convene a joint business forum later this year, with follow-up ministerial talks planned for September in Prague.
