Health authorities urge vigilance as symptoms re-emerge across regions

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed 12 new cases of Mpox as of January 18, 2026, raising the cumulative number of infections nationwide to 980.

According to the latest update, no new deaths have been reported, keeping the total Mpox-related fatalities at seven. However, one patient remains hospitalized and is currently receiving medical attention.

The GHS has reiterated that Mpox spreads primarily through close contact with infected individuals, including contact with body fluids, skin lesions, or contaminated materials.

Common symptoms of the disease include:

  • Fever

  • Rash

  • Headache

  • Muscle aches

  • Swollen lymph nodes

  • Chills

  • Fatigue

Health authorities are urging the public to remain alert and practice preventive measures, including regular handwashing, avoiding direct contact with suspected cases, and seeking early medical attention when symptoms appear.

The GHS has encouraged individuals experiencing any of the listed symptoms to report to the nearest health facility promptly for early detection and treatment, which remain crucial to controlling the spread.

Authorities say surveillance remains active, and further updates will be issued as the situation evolves.
