GOOGLE PARTNERS WITH GHANA TO INTRODUCE AI TOOLS IN TWI, EWE, DAGBANI TO EXPAND EDUCATION

According to Ghana’s Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, the country will increase access to education by using Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies created in regional languages.
On Friday, January 23, 2026, the minister shared updates on Facebook, stating that he recently met with the Vice President of Google at the ongoing Generative AI Summit in the UK, where tactics to enhance learning results throughout Ghana and Africa were explored.
“Yesterday, I had a fruitful engagement with the Vice President of Google, where ideas were shared to improve quality education in Ghana and Africa as a whole,” Minister Iddrisu said.
The AI project, which is a component of Google’s $37 million investment in Africa, focuses on non-standard speech to increase accessibility to digital learning by developing speech recognition and AI capabilities for Ghanaian languages like Twi, Ewe, and Dagbani.
In order to increase regional integration, Minister Iddrisu also emphasised the significance of including Hausa, a language that is widely spoken throughout Ghana and West Africa.
“The deployment of AI in local languages will help ensure that all learners, including those in rural communities or with disabilities, can access educational resources effectively,” he said.
Google has promised the Ministry that its educational resources will be implemented in Ghana on a zero-rated basis, according to Minister Iddrisu.
This contains materials and curriculum-aligned content on the ethical application of AI in education that are available to all students, regardless of their location or financial situation.
Ghana is a leader in inclusive digital education on the continent because to its partnership with Google, which also includes cooperation with the University of Ghana and GDI Hub to develop AI research in regional languages.
“Ghana is not just participating in the AI revolution, we are helping to shape it for Africa,” the minister said.
