GHANA MOURNS AS LEGENDARY ACTOR WILLIAM ADDO, ‘AKPATSE’, PASSES AWAY AT 79

The celebrated thespian, known for his comic brilliance on GTV's 'Thursday Theatre,' succumbed to a long-standing illness, leaving behind a towering legacy in theatre, film, and cultural advocacy.

Ghana’s entertainment industry is in mourning following the passing of one of its most revered figures, William Addo, popularly known by his stage name Akpatse. The legendary actor, lecturer, and cultural advocate died peacefully on Saturday, November 22, 2025, after a prolonged battle with serious health challenges.

With a career that spanned several decades, Mr. Addo became a household name through his unforgettable roles on GTV’s iconic Thursday Theatre and numerous stage and screen productions. His unique comedic timing, expressive delivery, and profound artistry endeared him to generations of Ghanaians, securing his place as a pillar of the nation’s performing arts.

A consummate professional, Mr. Addo was highly educated in his craft. He studied Drama and Theatre Studies at the University of Ghana and later earned a master’s degree in Acting and Directing from the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom.

Beyond his iconic performances, he served in key national roles, including as a Director at the National Theatre and Director of Programmes at the National Commission on Culture. He also lectured in the Theatre Arts Department, where he mentored and inspired many of Ghana’s now-celebrated actors and creatives.

In his later years, Mr. Addo faced significant health struggles, including visual impairment caused by glaucoma and cataracts. Despite these challenges, he remained a symbol of resilience and dedication to the arts until his passing.

Tributes have begun pouring in from colleagues, former students, and fans, all celebrating a life that profoundly shaped Ghana’s cultural landscape and left an indelible mark on the hearts of many.
