GHANA POLICE SEIZE SUSPECTED DRUGS, DRIVER ALLEGEDLY OFFERS GHC150,000 BRIBE

Police in Ghana’s Ashanti Region have arrested a driver after intercepting a vehicle carrying 713 slabs of substances suspected to be narcotic drugs during a snap check operation at Asanso Bekwai, authorities said.
The suspect, identified as Atampugri Akanyani, was arrested on 26 January 2026, when officers from the Ashanti South Regional Police Command stopped a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter bus, registration number AC 718-25, at the Asanso checkpoint.
A search of the vehicle uncovered nine nylon sacks concealed inside the bus, containing dried leaves suspected to be narcotic drugs, according to a police situational report.
“When the sacks were opened, they revealed 713 compressed slabs of dried leaves suspected to be narcotic drugs,” the report said.
Police said the suspect allegedly attempted to bribe officers with GH¢150,000 during the arrest, but the offer was rejected.
Akanyani is currently in police custody assisting with investigations, while authorities work to trace the source of the suspected drugs and identify other individuals linked to the offence.
The police said further updates would be provided as investigations continue.
