GHANA WATER TARGETS END OF JANUARY 2026 TO RESOLVE TESHIE WATER CRISIS

GWCL aims to restore Teshie-Nungua Desalination Plant after months of shortages; legal and technical hurdles cited as delays.

The Ghana Water Company Limited has announced it is working to restore operations at the Teshie-Nungua Desalination Plant by the end of January 2026, potentially ending months of severe water shortages affecting nearly 500,000 residents in Teshie, Nungua, Baatsona, Spintex, and Sakumono.

GWCL Communications Director Stanley Martey, speaking on Joy FM’s Newsnight, acknowledged the “legal and technical impasse” that has kept the $126 million plant offline since October 2025, forcing thousands to rely on expensive private water vendors.

Martey explained that while engineers are addressing physical repairs, legal complications involving contractual debts and servicing obligations between GWCL, the government, and private operators remain a challenge. He noted that high-level government intervention is driving efforts to meet the January deadline.

“Under the circumstances, we are doing everything possible to ensure that by the end of January, we should end this impasse,” Martey stated, though he cautioned that legal timelines are harder to predict than technical repairs.

The shutdown has severely impacted water supply in coastal communities, where residents previously received water an average of four days a week under a rationing schedule. Martey apologized for the inconvenience but emphasized that the delays are necessary to ensure long-term, safe water supply from the plant.

The crisis has raised public health concerns, with local clinics reporting increased risks of water-borne infections.
