Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has firmly stated that Ghana will not sell any of its diplomatic assets in Benin but will instead focus on renovating and restoring them to full operational capacity.
During an inspection tour of Ghana’s properties in Benin, the Minister assessed several government-acquired facilities, including one that has been abandoned since 2019 due to fire damage affecting its electrical system.
Ghana currently owns six properties in Benin, only one of which remains unutilized. Ablakwa expressed concern over structural challenges in some buildings, noting that mission staff have been compelled to rent private accommodations a situation he described as financially unsustainable.
“No property will be sold under my watch,” Ablakwa declared, emphasizing his dedication to preserving Ghana’s overseas assets. He stressed the urgency of renovations and, where necessary, complete reconstruction to ensure the facilities meet diplomatic mission standards.
The properties, acquired in 1999, are expected to undergo upgrades to improve functionality and reduce reliance on rented spaces.
