GHANA’S EMBASSY IN WASHINGTON DC REOPENS TODAY
New Diplomatic Team Deployed to Restore Integrity and Overhaul Systems
Ghana’s Embassy in Washington DC, temporarily closed due to a visa fraud scandal, is set to reopen today, May 29, 2025, following comprehensive reforms. The shutdown followed revelations that a locally recruited IT staff member had created an unauthorized link on the embassy’s website, redirecting visa and passport applicants to a private company charging unapproved fees.
In response, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs recalled and suspended embassy staff involved and appointed a seasoned diplomatic team, led by a senior official from the ministry, to manage the office and implement systemic changes. This team’s mandate includes a complete overhaul of operations, restoring integrity, and completing ongoing structural reforms.
An Information Technology (IT) unit has also been deployed to reconfigure the embassy’s website and payment platforms to eliminate all unofficial and unauthorized systems.
The matter has been escalated to the Auditor General and the Attorney General for further investigation and appropriate sanctions against those responsible.
