GJA CREATED MISLEADING IMPRESSION ABOUT ASSAULT ON JOURNALISTS – Kwakye Ofosu

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the government’s spokesperson, has criticized the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) for what he describes as a “misleading narrative” surrounding the alleged assault on seven journalists. Speaking at a press briefing at the seat of government, Kwakye Ofosu expressed disappointment with the GJA’s February 18, 2025, press conference, which he claims painted an inaccurate picture of the government’s stance toward journalists.

According to Kwakye Ofosu, the GJA’s statements created the false impression that the government was targeting journalists for their work. He emphasized that President John Dramani Mahama, a member of the GJA in good standing, would never condone or oversee a regime that attacks journalists.

“I must also express dismay about the way that narrative was woven. It created a certain misleading impression about the government and President Mahama, which needs to be straightened,” Kwakye Ofosu stated. “All of you are aware that the president is an easygoing, affable person who relates very well with all manner of people. He is a member of the Ghana Journalists Association in good standing, so essentially, he is one of you and therefore will be the last person to supervise a dispensation where journalists are attacked.”

Kwakye Ofosu further clarified that the government has no issue with journalists and dismissed claims that the alleged assaults were acts of reprisal for unfavorable reporting. “The way that the press conference was addressed and the way that the matters were couched created the impression that some journalists had written something that the government was not happy about and therefore the government was carrying out reprisals against them. That is completely incorrect. It is not true, and nothing of such nature has happened,” he explained.

The Minister of State in charge of Government Communication urged the public to disregard what he termed as a “false narrative” and reiterated the government’s commitment to press freedom. He also called for a more balanced and accurate representation of issues, particularly those involving the relationship between the government and the media.

The GJA’s press conference had highlighted concerns over the safety of journalists following reports of assaults on seven media professionals. While the association called for accountability and protection for journalists, Kwakye Ofosu’s response suggests a disconnect between the GJA’s concerns and the government’s perspective.
