“GLOBAL TRAVEL UNDER THREAT”— Abeiku Santana Raises Concerns Over Middle East Crisis

Gilbert Abeiku Aggrey Santana, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority, has voiced apprehension regarding the potential global repercussions of the intensifying hostilities between the United States, Israel, and Iran on international travel.

He cautioned that while the conflict remains geographically removed from Ghana, its economic and aviation-related ramifications could have far-reaching effects beyond the immediate theatre of operations.

In a statement underscoring the realities of an interconnected global economy, Mr. Aggrey Santana noted that instability in strategically significant corridors can precipitate swift disruptions across international systems.

He highlighted the intrinsic linkages between aviation networks, energy markets, and tourism flows, observing that elevated tensions in critical airspaces frequently compel airlines to implement rerouted flight paths, suspend operations, or revise schedules as a precautionary measure to ensure passenger safety.

Such operational adjustments inevitably carry financial implications. Extended flight routes contribute to heightened fuel consumption and increased insurance liabilities, factors which may ultimately influence airfare pricing. Furthermore, scheduling uncertainties have the potential to erode traveller confidence, particularly for long-haul itineraries reliant on multiple international connections.

He emphasised that even in instances where destinations remain secure, traveller behaviour can be significantly shaped by perceived risk.

Mr. Aggrey Santana further elaborated that sustained geopolitical instability could exert upward pressure on global fuel prices. Given that aviation fuel constitutes a substantial operational cost for airlines, any fluctuations are prone to reverberate throughout the broader economy.

Increased transport and logistics expenditures may, over time, influence the pricing of a wide range of goods and services, including those within the tourism sector.

Drawing parallels with the COVID-19 pandemic, he stressed that global shocks possess the capacity to rapidly reconfigure travel patterns and economic performance. The pandemic starkly illustrated the tourism sector’s susceptibility to exogenous disruptions and reinforced the critical importance of preparedness, adaptability, and coordinated crisis management protocols.

Consequently, Mr. Aggrey Santana urged stakeholders within Ghana’s tourism ecosystem to adopt a stance of vigilant proactivity rather than alarm.

He identified the reinforcement of contingency planning, the maintenance of transparent communication with international partners, the promotion of flexible booking policies, and the diversification of source markets as essential strategies for bolstering sectoral resilience.

Notwithstanding the uncertain long-term trajectory of the Middle East conflict, Mr. Aggrey Santana asserted that the deployment of strategic foresight and composed leadership will be indispensable for safeguarding Ghana’s tourism brand and sustaining growth within an increasingly unpredictable global environment.
