Celebrated Ghanaian gospel musician Empress Gifty has candidly shared her painful experience with divorce, describing it as one of the most traumatic phases of her life. In an emotional Instagram post on April 1, 2025, the singer revealed the mental toll of a failed marriage and why she now believes marrying an older man is the best decision for her.
Empress Gifty likened the aftermath of divorce to “starting life all over again,” emphasizing the deep emotional scars it leaves.
“You don’t have any idea the trauma one goes through when going through a divorce,” she said. “It’s like you are now beginning your entire life afresh, and the pain can linger for years.”
The “Yesu Mo” hitmaker also touched on the societal pressures women face when dating or marrying younger men after a divorce. She explained that family disapproval and public mockery can strain such relationships.
“It is frustrating if, after going through the divorce, you settle for a younger man because your family will disrespect him. Even your friends will mock him, and you won’t feel comfortable walking with him in public,” she revealed.
Empress Gifty, who is now happily married to an older man, contrasted her past struggles with her current sense of security.
“But if the man is older than you, you feel safe whenever you are with him. If I am with my husband, I feel comfortable because if you touch me, he will come for you too,” she said with a laugh.
Though she did not delve into the specifics of her past marriage, Empress Gifty encouraged those going through divorce to stay strong and seek healing before jumping into another relationship.
