LEGENDARY GOSPEL MUSICIAN YAW SARPONG PASSES ON

Asomafo founder remembered for decades of influence on Ghanaian gospel music

Legendary Ghanaian gospel musician and founder of the Asomafo gospel group, Yaw Sarpong, has passed on.

His manager, Nana Poku Ashis, confirmed the news to Myjoyonline.com on Sunday, though further details surrounding the cause of death have not yet been officially disclosed. His passing follows the recent death of Maame Tiwa, a longtime member of the Asomafo group, which dealt a heavy blow to the gospel music fraternity.

Yaw Sarpong had been battling ill health in recent years, often taking breaks from public performances to focus on treatment and recovery.

A towering figure in Ghana’s gospel music scene, Sarpong rose to prominence as the leader of Yaw Sarpong and Asomafo, a group widely credited with shaping modern Akan gospel music through inspirational lyrics and disciplined, scripture-based compositions.

Among their most beloved songs are Wo Haw Ne Hwan, Tie Obiaa, Aduro Yesu, and Awurade Kasa, many of which continue to resonate in churches and homes across the country.

In 2025, Yaw Sarpong was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards, a recognition of his outstanding contribution to the genre and his enduring legacy.

Tributes have begun pouring in from across the gospel and wider music community, as fans and fellow musicians mourn the loss of an icon whose music touched generations.
