GOVERNMENT DECLARES THREE DAYS OF NATIONAL MOURNING FOR NANA KONADU AGYEMAN-RAWLINGS
Flags will fly at half-mast nationwide as Ghana honors the former First Lady's legacy in women's empowerment and social development.

The Government of Ghana has declared three days of national mourning from Friday, October 24 to Sunday, October 26, 2025, in honor of former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, who passed away recently.
President John Dramani Mahama announced the decision on Friday, directing that all national flags be flown at half-mast at public institutions, diplomatic missions, and government facilities both in Ghana and abroad.
“This is in honour of her memory and in recognition of her distinguished service to our nation,” stated an official government release.
Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, who served as First Lady from 1981 to 2001, was widely celebrated for her pioneering work in women’s empowerment and social development through the 31st December Women’s Movement. Her advocacy significantly influenced policies on women’s rights and economic participation during Ghana’s democratic evolution.
The government described her as a dedicated public figure whose impact “remains deeply woven into the country’s social progress,” acknowledging her commitment to improving livelihoods and creating opportunities for women across Ghana.
The statement extended deepest condolences to the Rawlings family, particularly her children, as well as to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and all Ghanaians mourning her passing.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in consultation with the state in the coming days.
