GOVERNMENT INTRODUCES 24-HOUR EXPRESS PASSPORT SERVICE AT GH¢2,000

The new "super expedited option" is aimed at citizens with urgent travel needs, while the Ministry has also slashed the standard application fee by 30% to GH¢350.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has launched a same-day passport delivery service, allowing applicants to receive their passports within 24 hours for a fee of GH¢2,000.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced the new initiative, describing it as a “super expedited option” designed specifically for emergency travel situations.

“In one day, within 24 hours, same-day delivery, you can receive your passport once you apply, meet the criteria, and pay the special rate,” Mr Ablakwa stated. He acknowledged the operational demand of the service, noting that “staff will be working around the clock to ensure delivery within the 24-hour window.”

The Minister emphasized that the high-cost service is strictly for those with pressing needs. “If you do not have an urgent need, there is no reason to use this service. The standard service, priced at GH¢350, remains available and will deliver passports within 15 days,” he clarified.

The introduction of the express lane is part of broader reforms aimed at increasing efficiency and responsiveness. In a parallel move to ease the financial burden on the majority of applicants, the Ministry has also implemented a 30% reduction in the standard passport application fee, effectively lowering it from GH¢500 to GH¢350. This new, lower standard fee took effect on November 13, 2025.

With these dual reforms, the Ministry aims to create a more flexible system, catering to both routine applicants and those facing genuine emergencies, thereby enhancing overall service delivery for Ghanaian citizens.
