GOVERNMENT INTRODUCES NEW RULES FOR OKADA RIDERS, ONLY 25-YEAR-OLDS AND ABOVE CAN RIDE

Under the new plan, the Ghana Police Service will have more power to ensure riders follow road traffic laws, aiming to improve safety and make sure people obey the rules better.

There will be new rules for getting licenses, and part of this will involve setting up unions for those who ride motorcycles and tricycles.

These unions will work closely with the police to keep things organized and hold people accountable.

A national database will also be created to keep track of all motorcycles and tricycles across the country.

At a meeting in Accra to discuss changes to the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (L.I. 2180), the Minister emphasized the importance of everyone contributing their opinions to make effective changes.

This meeting was organized by the Ministry of Transport and included important groups like the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), and members from the Okada Riders Association.

The new rules will focus on making helmets a must, conducting regular vehicle inspections, and requiring rider training.

He noted:

“Motorcycles and tricycles cannot be confined to terminals alone, but there must be identifiable spaces marked as terminals or designated slots that they can utilise daily.”

The Minister also stressed that the licensing and registration of these vehicles would not be outsourced to private entities but would remain under the sole jurisdiction of the DVLA.
