GOVERNMENT REVOKES 278 SMALL-SCALE MINING LICENSES OVER REGULATORY BREACHES

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources takes decisive action against companies operating with expired permits or violating environmental and safety rules, signaling a tougher stance on mining sector oversight.

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has revoked the licenses of 278 small-scale mining companies across Ghana for operating with expired permits or failing to comply with environmental and safety standards.

The decision was announced on Thursday, October 23, 2025, by the Ministry’s Spokesperson and Media Relations Officer, Paa Kwesi Schandorf, via a Facebook post. He emphasized that the action reflects the government’s commitment to instilling discipline, accountability, and environmental responsibility within the small-scale mining industry.

“This action is part of the Ministry’s renewed commitment to ensuring discipline, accountability, and environmental responsibility within the small-scale mining sector,” Schandorf stated.

The move aligns with the firm stance of the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, who has vowed to restore order in a sector long plagued by illegal mining activities, commonly referred to as galamsey.

For years, small-scale mining in Ghana has been criticized for contributing to deforestation, water pollution, and land degradation, despite its role in supporting local livelihoods and the national economy.

The license revocations are part of the government’s broader strategy to enforce sustainable mining practices, protect natural resources, and safeguard the environment. The Ministry has also indicated that further enforcement actions will follow in the coming months to ensure full regulatory compliance and rebuild public trust in the management of Ghana’s natural resources.
