GOV’T ROLLS OUT EMERGENCY BUS SUPPORT ON MAJOR ACCRA ROUTES TO EASE PEAK-HOUR WOES

The Transport Ministry has begun deploying at least eight buses each on four key corridors during evening rush hours, using returning long-distance coaches to improve safety and reduce commuter delays.

The Ministry of Transport has launched an emergency bus support initiative on four major Accra routes to alleviate severe evening transportation challenges faced by commuters.

Transport Minister Joseph Nikpe Bukari announced the measure on Tuesday, December 10, stating that at least eight buses will operate on each of the following corridors between 4:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.:

  • Accra–Madina–Adenta
  • Accra–Achimota–Amasaman
  • Accra–Mallam–Kasoa
  • Accra–Tema Beach Road

The buses, sourced from Intercity STC Coaches Limited, are long-distance coaches returning early to Accra that will be redeployed on intra-city routes during peak hours. “We will ensure that those buses are available at the peak hours to support our commuters who close from work to get home safely,” Minister Bukari said.

The initiative is an immediate response to months of commuter complaints about unreliable transport, long waiting times, and exploitative fare hikes by some commercial drivers during rush hours.

The Ministry plans to expand the number of buses in the coming weeks while developing longer-term reforms to improve Accra’s urban transport system.
