GOV’T SEEKS STRATEGIC PARTNERS TO TAKEOVER AIRTELTIGO – Communications Minister
Samuel Nartey George reveals government negotiations to revamp telecom operator amid poor service complaints
The Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has disclosed that the government is actively seeking strategic partners to take over and revamp AirtelTigo’s operations.
Mr. George made the announcement during a high-level meeting with CEOs and technical teams of MTN, Telecel, and AirtelTigo, aimed at addressing ongoing issues of poor quality of service in the telecommunications sector nationwide.
“For the first time, I’ll put out that government is currently in negotiations with a strategic partner to revamp and take over AirtelTigo. We’ve started those conversations and are giving a 60-day window to complete these negotiations, with the goal to see full rollout of improved services by the end of Q3,” the minister stated.
The government acquired full ownership of AirtelTigo from Bharti Airtel in 2021, but the telecom company has since struggled to deliver reliable network coverage, especially in expanding urban and regional areas.
A comprehensive quality of service assessment by the National Communications Authority (NCA), covering 48 localities, revealed significant service delivery gaps, reinforcing the urgent need for corrective actions.
Mr. George reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring every Ghanaian, regardless of location, has access to dependable telecom services, positioning the revitalization of AirtelTigo as a key step toward boosting competition and raising sector standards.
