The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has disclosed plans to review and increase monthly stipends for Ghanaian students studying abroad under government-sponsored programs.
During an engagement with Ghanaian students in Cotonou, Benin, Ablakwa said consultations would soon begin to adjust the allowances upwards, though he did not disclose specific figures. He also pledged to address delays in stipend disbursements.
Currently, Ghanaian students in Benin on a one-year exchange program receive:
- Monthly stipend: CFA 45,000 (≈GH₵1,147)
- One-time book allowance: CFA 60,000 (≈GH₵1,500)
- Medical allowance: CFA 60,000
Students have raised concerns about the program’s duration being reduced from 12 to 6 months, which they say makes it difficult to complete academic requirements.
The Minister’s visit to Benin formed part of the government’s new policy to engage Ghanaian communities abroad quarterly. Over 2,000 Ghanaians currently reside in Benin, according to officials.
Ablakwa’s tour will continue to Nigeria as part of his West African engagement schedule.
