RAPPER GURU WINS UNIVERSITY OF GHANA SRC PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

Ghanaian hiplife star, Maradona Yeboah Adjei, popularly known as Guru NKZ, has secured a significant victory in the University of Ghana Student Representative Council (SRC) presidential elections. Guru, alongside his running mate Jeffery Adu-Yeboah, garnered 9,455 votes out of a total of 18,659 valid votes cast, winning 50.7% of the vote.

His main opponent, Emmanuel Owusu Amponsah, with running mate Lawrence Edinam Egleh, obtained 6,645 votes, representing 35.6%. Despite fierce competition and controversy throughout his campaign, Guru’s determination and popularity among students led to his election as SRC President on Wednesday, September 18, 2024.

The musician’s bid for the SRC presidency was challenging. Initially disqualified from the race due to non-resident status in a violation of Article 30 of the SRC constitution, which requires candidates to reside on campus, Guru petitioned against the decision. His legal team sought a review of the ruling, submitting an injunction request to suspend the elections until a proper hearing was conducted.

On September 15, 2024, the Appeals Board overturned the disqualification by a unanimous 7-0 vote, allowing Guru to re-enter the race. However, the election faced yet another obstacle just a day before the vote, when an Accra Circuit Court granted an interlocutory injunction against the University’s decision to reinstate Guru.

The injunction, brought by level 200 student Joseph Asioh Mawuli, challenged the SRC’s decision to allow Guru and Amponsah back into the race, citing non-compliance with Article 30. Mawuli sought to prevent the inclusion of both candidates in the ballot.

Despite the legal opposition, the University’s Electoral Commission (EC) decided to proceed with the online elections as planned, confirming that no restrictions prevented the polls from taking place.

Guru’s victory marks a significant achievement in his already successful career, blending his popularity in the entertainment world with student politics. This election outcome will likely cement his influence on campus, where he will take on the SRC leadership mantle amidst heightened attention from students and the wider public.
