Carlos Kingsley Ahenkorah, the MP for Tema West and previous Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry, has spoken about the contentious ballot-snatching event that took place in 2021 during the election of the Parliament Speaker.
In a special interview with UTV that was observed by MyNewsGH, Ahenkorah justified his behavior, mentioning the absence of acknowledgment for his steadfast dedication to his party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The event, which stunned the country and garnered international news, took place soon after the 2020 general elections when focus turned to the election of the Speaker of Parliament.
While the votes for the Speaker were being tallied, Carlos Ahenkorah took a ballot box and dramatically left the scene, causing a significant disruption to the parliamentary proceedings.
This act of rebellion occurred amid a close contest between the NDC candidate Alban Bagbin and the NPP’s Prof. Mike Oquaye.
Alban Bagbin ultimately triumphed, yet Ahenkorah’s actions were broadly regarded as a historic event in Ghana’s political landscape.
During his interview, Ahenkorah expressed his viewpoint, indicating that he felt his commitment to the NPP was overlooked, despite the fact that he perceived the incident as a protection of his party.
“My loyalty to my party went unrecognized,” Ahenkorah said. “Even President Akufo-Addo, who I stood by throughout the years, did not acknowledge what I did. I acted in the best interest of the NPP.”
“Had I acted in favour of the NDC, I would have been celebrated and rewarded,” he added, suggesting that his loyalty to the NPP, despite the controversial nature of his actions, went unnoticed.
