“HE DESERVED DEATH SENTENCE AND HE GOT 70, GO AND FORM AN ATTA AYI MOVEMENT”– Bridget Otoo Defends Chief Justice Nominee

In the continuing social media controversy surrounding Chief Justice nominee Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s remarks regarding the 70-year prison sentence for infamous armed robber Ataa Ayi, Presidential Staffer and media personality, Bridget Otoo has joined her voice.
Speaking to the Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday, November 10, 2025, during the screening process, the nominee clarified that the 70-year sentence was required to safeguard public safety and to make sure that justice took into account the victims’ emotional, social, and financial suffering.
According to Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, judges follow sentencing guidelines, but certain offenses require stronger punishments.
Since then, his comments have sparked a range of reactions on the internet, with some supporting his evaluation and others accusing him of bias.
Broadcaster Bridget Otoo defended Justice Baffoe-Bonnie in response to the internet outrage, claiming that his comments were inaccurate.
“He spoke in context. Beyond that, this hardened criminal killed mercilessly! He deserved death but got 70 years,“ she posted on X.
She suggested that anyone who think Ataa Ayi’s 70-year sentence is unfair and unjust start a movement in her favor.
“If anyone thinks Ataa Ayi’s sentence was unfair, they can form Ataa Ayi Movement”,” highlighting the lasting trauma inflicted on countless Ghanaians by the notorious robber’s violent crimes.
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, inhabitants of Accra were tormented by an infamous armed robbery gang led by Ataa Ayi, once Ghana’s most dreaded criminal.
Following one of the largest police manhunts in the nation, he was apprehended in 2005 and found guilty on several charges of armed robbery.
