HE DOESN’T KNOW WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT – Ato Forson Replies Mohammed Amin On Claim NPP Never Implemented Betting Tax

Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the current Finance Minister, strongly disagrees with what the former Deputy Finance Minister, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, said about the betting tax.

Dr. Amin, who is from the NPP, claimed that their government never collected this tax.

In an interview on Tuesday night, Dr. Forson addressed these claims. After the NPP minority stated in a press conference following the budget presentation that they never enforced the betting tax, Dr. Forson accused Dr. Amin of misleading Ghanaians.

Dr. Forson explained that there is clear evidence showing the betting tax was indeed collected by the previous NPP government. He stated that the NPP even admitted to raising 80 million Ghanaian cedis from this tax.

Because of this, he is puzzled by Dr. Amin’s statements.

“…My checks revealed that it was implemented in the second half of 2024. And my checks also reveal that year-to-date, the government of Ghana has collected over GH¢80 million from betting tax, so I don’t know what he’s talking about,” Ato Forson said.

Dr. Amin’s comments came after he led the minority’s response to the budget reading on Tuesday. He insisted that the NPP never implemented the betting tax.

He argued that the current government is misleading the public by claiming they have removed a tax that, according to him, never existed.

This claim stirred a lot of reactions on social media, where many criticized the NPP for not being truthful.

The tax had been in place since last year, and even Dr. Bawumia, the NPP’s flagbearer, had promised to eliminate it if he were elected.
