Health workers at Tetteh Quarshie Hospital are making an urgent plea for speed bumps and a pedestrian bridge on the Akwapem Mampong-Accra highway following the tragic loss of a midwife to a speeding car.
In black and red attire, hospital employees assembled sadly to mourn their coworker’s death through a serious demonstration.
“I have been hit very hard, my parents can’t even sleep well,” shared the deceased’s sister, Sarah Nartey. “She was even supposed to graduate from Wisconsin University on November 14. I can’t ask for justice; vengeance is of the Lord,” she lamented.
This tragic event signifies the sixth occurrence on this hazardous section of road. Health workers have given a one-week deadline for their demands to be fulfilled, with a warning to go on strike if necessary actions are not carried out.
Francis Aboagye, the protest’s convenor, stated, “We have done what is lawful by writing several letters to demand speed ramps. With this protest, we have given a one-week ultimatum; speed ramps must be fixed, else we will lay our tools down.”
Nurse Abena Ntow added passionately, “We have lost an experienced midwife who saved women and delivered children. It’s disheartening; we need the speed ramps.”
In response, state officials, led by Eastern Regional Minister Seth Kwame Acheampong, have promised immediate solutions. “My condolences to you, I am saddened at your loss. We will find solutions to the challenge,” Acheampong assured, adding that a ramp strip will be added as a temporary measure and a footbridge is being considered for the long term.
